Alexis Bester started his career as a pilot but then began painting seriously in 2001 on his Angels series, “When Angels make Music”. After a short break in America in 2003, he started on his current series on landscape paintings. These oil paintings portray the Western Cape landscapes and seascapes with a touch of surrealism using bright and rich colours of his African environment and culture. He lives near Tulbagh at the foot of the Witzenberg Mountains on his family’s farm where he also has his own studio. His main influences are Georgio de Cherico, Amedeo Modigliani, Picasso's early work and Edward Hopper.
